There was a time, in the not so distant past, when Record Stores roamed the Earth in great numbers. We fed off of them. They supplied our musical needs. They introduced us to the latest and the greatest records, the popular ones which everybody had to have, and the obscure ones which only the coolest of the cool knew about.
You might see anybody in the record stores, your neighbors, visiting acts, local legends, radio personalities, concert promoters, record promoters, musicians, singers, and even groupies. They all gathered at the record stores to discuss the music and the music happenings.
There were basically 3 One Stops which serviced the Hampton Roads area. A One Stop is where the little independent record stores got their records from in bulk so they could supply their customers on an individual basis, with a touch of friendly service and a knowledgeable tip in the right direction.
Those One Stops were:
Tidewater Ones Stop
Peninsula One Stop
Dean's One Stop
There were the big chain record stores like Peaches and Tracks. But the real gems were found in the little independent stores, owned and operated by local music lovers who knew how to slip a faithful customer a bargain and keep them up on their favorite music.
