The Newport Theater, 35th Street & Newport Avenue, Norfolk Virginia, was operated by the KIU Cultural Arts Society in the late 70s. KIU, an acronym for Kuumba Imani Umoja (Swahili for creativity, faith, unity) showcased the arts and sponsored entertainment for the community. Some of the performers which were featured included Jade, The Wooten Brothers, Lina Brown, the Cool Breeze house band, and other local artists who went on to bigger things. Bernard "Scotty" Scott was a key comonent of the organization. Scott was a former concert promoter and manager whose experience and insight helped launch the project. The above is a flyer from 1978.
